A Jumbo Exhibition

The magnificent beauty of Indian and African elephants in their natural habitat, captured by the lenses of talented photographers, were on display at Rangoli Metro Art center on Sunday.

The exhibition was organized by a group called Friends of elephants which hopes to create awareness about the cruelty faced by these animals at the hands of humans.

The images were selected from over 800 images sent by around 160 photographers from across the globe. Each photograph showcased different moods of the elephants.

Three best photographs from the exhibition won coupons worth Rs. 12,000 from Darter photography. Seven other good photographs received by Honeycomb’s Photostop which would entail free printing of photographs at the venue. Photostop is into archival printing and hence photographers achieve the exact colors and shades.

This group, Friends of Elephants has been organizing such one day awareness programmes at the gallery since January 2014 and hope to continue it every month. They do it in every form like documentaries, talks, skits etc to highlight various aspects of elephants, including the cruelty they are facing in the hands of humans.

A documentary by Sandeep Kadur was screened later in the evening and it was followed by a talk by Ajay desai.

It just means that the story being shared, do not have the words to express the individuals success. So we decided to let this brilliant individuals words reach your thoughts directly. A brief intro about this individual should acquaint you with his entrepreneurial progress.
Nadeer Ali, born in 1976 in Thiruvilwamala, a small village in Thrissur, is the second son in his family with three siblings, a father who was a taxi driver and a homemaker mother. His father moved to Oman as a driver in order to support his family.
Financial crunch didn’t crush Nadeer’s dreams. He graduated with a diploma in Electronics from the Govt. Polytechnic College, Palakkad in 1995. He started his career as an assembly line programmer that would span 6 years in Bangalore, with progress and immense knowledge acquisition, working with the giants in the world of Weighing & Industrial Automation.
His experience took him to the Middle East as an engineer in 2001 and got him exploring the business facets of the Weighing & Metrology Industry. Working there, made him realise the lack of regulations in the Legal & Scientific Metrology systems, and a huge scope for improvement in running a business.
 
Himatrix was started in 2004 by Nadeer wholly and he worked alone initially. With the key realization that the UAE’s Weighing & Metrology Industry could be organized and lead on with better standards, quality optimization and the best service to Clients, Himatrix hired employees, new to the Gulf and its work culture. This helped in moulding the new talent via training, to value the Clients, maintain high quality standards and build trust through such business associations. Himatrix got an ISO 9001:2008 certification in the year 2008 with just a strength of 4 employees and a turnover of 1.50 Million USD.

Nadeer: Our quality standards that we adhere to and implement across all client projects in the industry, gave us the growth and the platform needed to compete for such an award. Winning this award is indeed a great confidence booster for Himatrix and a significant business achievement that we are proud of!
 
Honeycomb: Himatrix has grown leaps and bounds since you started it. What is your inspiration behind starting such a business?
 
Nadeer: My vision since a young age has been to help the needy and support orphans on their journey to a successful future. Here is where I drew inspiration to start what has become a great sense of solidarity to my vision. This business is just the means to achieve such a humble vision. Working under someone would never help me achieve my vision is something I realised since my first stint at Bangalore. My ability to start this business, 2 years prior to my target, is the key motivation to make this vision of mine a reality soon.
 
Honeycomb: We think it is only fair to categorise Himatrix as highly serviced oriented which accounts for its success. But, is Himatrix only concentrating on the niche market currently?
 
Nadeer: Clients in our industry depend on four key services:

3. Software Solutions
4. Total Plant Automation
Rarely are these four services available with one company, except Himatrix. Hence we are primarily solution providers and not a service provider. But now that competitors in the industry have realised the need for solutions similar to what Himatrix provides, we are planning to up the ante by initiating Brand Marketing Strategies for Himatrix.
 
Honeycomb: How did you finance your start-up and the expansions that followed until now?
 
Nadeer: The capital investment was only Rs.4,50,000, borrowed from a few individuals who believed in my capability to take this start-up to greater heights of success. These investors saw huge returns within five years, where Himatrix paid back Rs.1,35,00,000. Our expansions in 2012, were at an estimated cost of Rs.53,00,00,000, which was raised from our business.
 
Honeycomb: Did the 2008 global economic meltdown affect your business?
 
Nadeer: It did in a positive way only. Till the 2008 crisis companies did off with volume sales, paying no heed to quality & service. The government started implementing regulations during the crisis to ensure no further economic losses were sustained. Himatrix was already equipped with International Accreditations & Calibration Labs by that time to support the government with Training & Solution Development for legal Verification. Since high quality & service were imbibed into our business, we didn’t have to do anything to evade the crisis. Other competitors had to re-think their business to tune up to the new government regulations & Himatrix pulled way ahead while such changes took time for them.
 
Honeycomb: What challenges have you come across while running this business?
Nadeer: Challenges are many. But, certain key challenges are a priority to solve in running a successful business.
 
At the beginning, investment was the key challenge. I hardly had any money to start the business. The initial days were hard, working 18 hours a day at a barren office & running around the market servicing Clients.
 
The next stage was the challenge of trust among suppliers & to show Clients that no matter how small we were as against the big giants, capable of killing small competition, we were one of the best and could even surpass every competitor’s services provided in the market in terms of quality & reliability.
 
The final challenge was to develop an outstanding team, giving them the confidence for their growth and meeting Himatrix’s work culture to achieve the targets.
 
Honeycomb: Where you see Himatrix 5 years from now?
 
Nadeer: Himatrix currently has 5 diversified registrations in the UAE, with the last one being our biggest diversification into a manufacturing unit named Matrix Pack. We are planning to start an offshore operations unit in India by the end of 2016. We are targeting to become a global orgnisation with an annual turnover of Rs.2,40,00,00,000 by 2020.
 
Honeycomb: What are the rewards of owning a business as compared to working for someone else?
 
Nadeer: Drawing comparisons, from my own experience, my beliefs & attitude of working towards achieving my career goals has been the same, irrespective of owning a business. The important difference is the freedom & power that is lacking when you work for someone else, especially when your beliefs aren’t in tune with that of your employer. Then you don’t belong there. With owning a business, your visions & ideas can be conceived and implemented ethically and you work responsibly towards making your vision a success. Being patient for the right opportunity to start your own business is the biggest reward in my opinion. That way, not only do you grow, but you create a platform for others working under you to grow with limitless opportunities.
 
Honeycomb: Do you believe there is some sort of a formula to becoming a successful business owner?
 
Nadeer: There is no specific formula as per my experience goes. The passion, the willingness, not giving up, working hard, being very ethical, giving your Clients the best, be it products or services etc. are just a few things. Most importantly, trusting your employees, giving them the respect they deserve & helping them on their way to success, is what will make you & your business successful.
 
Honeycomb: What according to you are the top three traits needed to become a successful businessman.
 
Nadeer: I believe, loyalty, a very strong personality & simplicity are the three key traits in an individual to help on the way to becoming a successful business owner.
 
Honeycomb: Who has been your greatest inspiration?
 
Nadeer: Dr. Abdul Kalam, Sheik Mohammed Bin Sayed (Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi) & especially Narendra Modi, not on account of his political background, but for administrative & leadership skills, that help him make decisions & implement them, which are similar to how I believe in running my business.
 
Honeycomb: That is indeed inspirational! Finally, to end this brilliant interview, how would you define success, as a message for readers.
 
Nadeer: I define success as a result of our life’s decisions & actions taken and how it affects our personal & professional relations.

Thathwamasi Photography Exhibition in Bengaluru

Thathwamasi, a photo exhibition that echoes woes of the Mother Earth organised by Honeycomb Creative Support held at the Belaku Gallery which is part of the Rangoli Metro Art Centre in the M G Road Metro station, Bengaluru from 21st– 23rdof November 2014 speaks both the beauty as well as crudeness of Sabarimala, one of the famous pilgrimages in India. It was N P Jayan, a renowned Photo Journalist and Photographer who captured the photographs of Periyar Tiger Reserve and Sabarimala. This exhibition is an initiative by well-known Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi.

The exhibition was inaugurated by eminent photographers Mr .Anand Sharan and Mr T.N.A Perumal..The inauguration also witnessed the occupancy of Mr. Jayaprakash, who is the all India general secretary for the Sabarimala Ayyappa Seva Samajam. The inauguration function saw a sound response and the presence of many eminent personalities lightened the same. The function also instigated the awareness for the damages caused at the Periyar Tiger reserve and Pampa River.

During the inauguration, Mr. T.N.A Perumal applauded the works of Mr. Jayan. He says he was mesmerized to see the beautiful captures by him and also felt sad learning about the destruction caused at Sabarimala. Photographs sure do speak louder than words. He also mentioned such awareness is necessary so that it can be corrected before anything serious happens. Mr. Anand Sharan also supported on the words of Mr T.N.A Perumal and said he was impressed with the works of Mr Jayan. He also said he is ready to lend him any kind of help in terms of Photography.

Mr. N P Jayan has been photographing this area over the past three years to cover the beauty as well as the natural destruction that has occurred here as the side-effects of pilgrimage. The collection of photographs, progressing from beauty to devastation, forces one to ponder over one’s own deeds of annihilation in the name of faith. The photographs expose the ailing forests and the increasing level of pollution caused by pilgrim tourism. Our endeavor is to create awareness among the present generation through our exhibitions, thereby help prevent further damage and save the Periyar Tiger Reserve and holy River Pamba. The exhibition is the fourth in the series. The previous exhibitions were held at India International Centre in New Delhi, Bombay Natural History Society in Mumbai and Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat in Bengaluru.

We would say out of pride that it is with the belief success alone does not make any sense but contributing for the sustainability of weak communities does, we have commenced our very first CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activity with Sneha Orphanage, a non- profit organisation located in Bangalore. It was a part of our “Let me color you” campaign which is all about coloring the lives of people through whichever way we can. Being a communication design agency we transform color and design into perfection.
The company would want to do work that contributes to society whose values we share, where their actions count and their views matter. Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community. We live in an era where none of us does not even know who our neighbour is. Every one of us has shrunk to self- centeredness due to power of ego and money. Honeycomb wanted to bring about a change in that and that is where we decided to move ahead with CSR activities.
All hails to Ms Rita Thomas and Mr Prakash for running Sneha Orphanage provided with food, shelter, education and medical services. They takes up children up to 18 years who have been dispossessed and offers foster care with much effort and love. Here we could see around thirty five children who came from different background and are offered with a safe and beneficial environment for their betterment and also for them to grow in a nurtured tone. Most of the kids does not even know their parents, who they are, where they originally belong to and what they are. Whereas few others were dropped at the orphanage knowingly, few others were left out by their parents or relatives due to financial as well as prestigious issues. 
For us it was a perfect break when we did a visit to the particular orphanage since it made us realise where we stand, what we have and most important what we exactly are. While pursuing such a fast busy living, it is required to take such breaks by getting ourselves involved in certain community services. We really doubt are orphans really orphans? Because what we could see was unanimous minds- one family, one culture, one language which comes from the heart and a common care taker.
It was hard for us to believe each and every kid is extraordinary and we all were quite astonished grabbing the fact, infact the truth. All of them has some or the other unique quality- some are good dancers, some are good singers, some others are real artists and the list goes on. Sneha orphanage is more like a family where love, care, sharing and concern for each other lives. Honeycomb feels blessed to commence CSR activities with Sneha Orphanage. We are grateful to Sneha orphanage authority and last but not least great almighty for giving us a space to help those kids.

The greatest disease and the suffering is to be unloved, uncared, unwanted, to be shunned by everybody and to be just nobody. So let’s bring about a change, let’s get inspired, let’s start with ourselve’s

We met Mr. Chitti Babu, Head- Visual Design, at Titan recently for a job brief. As how we learnt he’s a very simple and down to earth person. During the discussion he shared a few words about himself which inspired us to write this post on him. He shares here about how he pursued his passion and honed his curiosity to reach where he is now. Lets hear it in his own words.

“I consider myself as a Designer with evolving passion & pure curiosity.
My introduction to this field started as a hobby to play around with the layouts that can be made with typesetting on a letterpress at a very young age. With a strong impulse to follow my passion, I dropped out of college, discontinuing my formal studies and led the path of interest and passion. I was again introduced to Printing as an offset printer for my career path, during which I started with leading the production department of a newspaper company.  This led me to the path of creativity with exposure to its studio; where-in, in next two years I found myself leading the studio and the production department of many renowned newspaper companies.

As I was hungry for more dope, it made me jump from the newspaper industry to the Advertising Agency. While working with some world’s acclaimed ad agencies, I developed passion for lighting, photography and films. This passion made me explore the film world through photography, cinematography,  & Film Editing as I worked with renowned film producers and directors. Soon after, as the time again came for a big leap, I leapt into a international publishing house to explore the beautiful world on layout and its science. Growing from there as I had various successful stints on different fields of Graphic Design, I realised technology is the Key to future of design and I started taking my steps with the technology. I acquired a great experience in the field of IA/UI/UX  and usability with the successful IT companies and it continues.

Currently, I pursue a successful career path. I am heading the in-house Visual Communication Department at the India’s largest retail jewelry brand Tanishq for past 10 years. It has been a great experience with a continuous innovative path, leaving a new trail for tanishq in India through my contribution.  But with this.. the passion I have acquired has led me to become a successful photographer, film editor, graphic designer and so on…that is still going on.

Artist of the Week – Hema Narayanan
Hema Narayanan, one of the charismatic personalities in photography is Chennai born, but brought up in Karnataka. Finishing her schooling and PU in Davangere, Hema is a thorough convent bred. A lot of creativity was imbibed in her since she was from a small town with very few urban distractions, she says. Her father, being a textile engineer, encouraged young Hema in many extracurricular activities. This made her travel a lot, as a student for competitions held in Karnataka. Though very competent in extracurricular, she also was good in academics  being a topper throughout her student life. Space and Sky fascinated her as a young girl, as she always looked up the sky and wondered about the stars ever so much and how it would be, to be an astronaut, or at least an astronomer.
 

Her Engineering was from Davangere and her Masters in Technology was from the University of Delhi. She recollects her time in the ISRO and IISc to be her favorites, where she completed her M.Tech thesis and projects. She joined TCS as a fresher and moved to Wipro Technologies a couple of years later. She spent more than a decade in several roles in Wipro, with the final one being that of, a Technology Consultant and Architect. Having worked in diverse fields and technologies, she was always keen on experimenting in the work she did. In fact, when she quit her plush IT job in 2009, she had three things on her mind that she wanted to pursue: firstly, being an Independent Technology Consultant, secondly being a Photojournalist and finally a Writer. The decision to take up what her heart was after was not an easy one, but perhaps an obvious one.
 

 
Hema has been photographing for more than a decade now  it evolved from being a hobby to a passion to being her profession, today. Photography hitchhiked a ride with me a decade ago, as I traveled to parts of the world during the days of my corporate profession. After seeing the world, through my lens, I remained devoted to the art of photography, ever since she says. Her interest lies in people and their expressions, travel, festivals, culture, art & artists, landscapes, heritage & monuments. She undertakes commercial photography assignments in lifestyle, home decor, interiors, travel and philanthropy.
 

 
She is published in many Indian National dailies, leading travel magazines, in-flight magazines, online journals and publishing Houses. To name a few, Deccan Herald, The Hindu, DNA, Indian Express, Femina, Discover India, Inside Outside, Verve online, Jet Airways, Go Air, Orange County, Travel Span, Culturama and others. She has done technology articles for Times of India, Deccan Herald and also covered post budget analysis as a correspondent for Economic Times.

 
She became a licensed Artist with Getty Images and Shutterstock agencies this past year. Her work has been showcased in exhibitions, including those at Alliance Franchise (Adventure Sports), cultural festival Ninasam at Sagar (New Generation, New Vision), an exhibition to celebrate the Thai cuisine at The Lalith Ashok (Taste of Thailand) and others at Max Muller Bhavan, Bangalore Habba & Art Mantram. Her most recent exhibition at Rangoli Metro for CRY (Child Rights and You) on the subject of  Children and Education’s, remains close to her heart- where she covered many slums of Bangalore looking at reasons that act as obstacles to the education of the children. She later took up her own initiative, Diya Jale to set up small book libraries in orphanages in the city.
 

 
Her photographic accomplishments include, being shortlisted in the top 35 of the 2011 travel scholarship conducted by National Geographic and World Nomads, her image being chosen to represent Rajasthani culture by Edinburgh International Festival 2011 for their brochures and website, her image making it to the Canon Edge yearly calendar, and also her pictures being published in a Government of India sponsored coffee table book, India for a Billion Reasons.  She was featured as a Woman Achiever Photographer’s, by Kannada Prabha, Times of India Neighborhood and Mphasis corporate newsletter. 

 
Teaching is something she really loves doing and has a tremendous flare for. So after quitting IT, she has been teaching photography for over 5 years in various photography genres. She cherishes teaching the 40-50 children every Monday, at The International School of Bangalore (TISB). I have learned a lot of amazing photography techniques, in the process of teaching these kids, she says. In addition, she has judged a few photo contests and is one among the PRO Travel photographers for GuruShots.com.
 

 
When asked about her stint with Writing, she said,  I have cherished writing longer than photography. Having written enough travelogues in my personal diaries, I decided to go public 7-8 years ago. Using words to express what you see and feel is like reliving the journey again. Having authored her first e-Book – a Travel cum Expat Guide on the Splendor of Mysore (also available on Amazon Kindle), she plans to bring out more e-books.

 
When probed further, it was evident that she had a creative penchant all along – right from her younger days. She was into classical dancing (learned Bharatanatyam for 13 years), guitar, keyboard, singing and even theatres (her memorable ones were that of roles she enacted in Shakespearean plays). Music was an integral part of her life and when she started traveling from 1995, she developed a unique habit of recording the local FM radio channel music  and today she has a huge collection of the cassettes!
 

 

 

It was only making it imperative for me to see how she could take risks, dabble with several things at the same time and lo! she made a paradigm shift from a technology stream to that of Photography. If not view the sky through a telescope, why despair? View the world through a viewfinder she sums it up.
