Significance of photographic print
We are in a digital era where technology has reached the mainstream and photo prints has taken the side seat. With new inventions and digital driven gadgets, kids of this generation barely know the emotional connection one used to have with a printed photo. Although the digital cameras and technological advancement are a boon in so many ways, there remains emptiness and detachment. We have the photos at our fingertips, saved in so many devices (thanks to technology). But, have we paused for a second and thought whether the photos close to our heart deserve a place in cold devices or in our life? A printed photo, as it grows old, becomes as important as a historical artifact. It has a story to tell you, the love for preserving memories grows in you when you get a glimpse of age-old photos of your family whom you have not seen in real life.
Why print photos in digital era?
Emotional connection:
We get to share, tag, like and comment on photos on various websites, which gives us mere pleasure that people has noticed something that is important to us personally. But at some point it’s purely the bond you have with the photo. We always have a special connection with people whose photos are in print. Physically holding a photo creates a touching moment than watching it in latest gadgets. Preserve the photographic prints which has in it special feelings and emotions
Capture the moment:
Digital cameras give us an opportunity to click photos till we are satisfied with a picture perfect image. But, when families and friends gets into the picture frame, we fail to save the light moments we share. We wind up deleting the pictures where people are themselves. This kills the exclusivity of the photo. We do not remember the moment but just the people we were with.
 
Technological revolution:
The storage for digital media seems to change often according to the inventions. We are forced to move along with the growth of technology to make sure the digital Medias we have saved are still made accessible for usage. Whereas prints remain the only accessible mode all time. In this fast paced life, when we stumble into printed photographs of our close ones, then we realize the purpose of clicking photos. Reminisce the treasured moment as you skim through the prints stored in a cardboard box.
Every photo has a story to tell. There is nothing like holding a photo of your loved one in your hands. Technology is a gift for all humankinds without doubt; this post is a mere remainder to people who is stuck in the rat race and forgotten how it feels to hold a print photo of your loved one.

An International Exhibition organized by Karnataka Photographers Association, conducted from 18th – 20th of July, 2014 – DIGI IMAGE saw a huge crowd of ardent photograph lovers on the very first day of the second year of the exhibition. This year nearly 150 companies turned up to proudly showcase their products and work. Artist of the Week – Mayur Channagere
Mayur Channagere whose work has been published in Vogue, Rolling Stones magazine and The Rock Street Journal magazine, is the Principal Photographer and Founder of PhotoMojo is An AGNA Venture. He took photography as a hobby in 2004 when his grandfather gifted him a 25 year old Yashica Camera.
 

 
Born in 1977 in Bombay, he did his schooling in Davangere and Mysore, PUC in National Collage Jayanagar and did his BBM in SSMRV-Bangalore, he went on to do his MBA in University of Hull, London. He came back to India in 2001 after a stint in the UK.
 

 
He is diverse when it comes to photography covering from lifestyle photography, wedding photography, editorial, environmental portraiture, interiors to fine art and travel photography. He has been working on a Tyagaraja’s who is considered the father of Carnatic music. Through the photo essay  he is trying to document how Saint Tygaraja’s life is being celebrated today through Carnatic music and Vedic Celebration. He has also been working on a Every day Hero’s and a Little Earth’s, where Every day Hero’s is about common people doing extraordinary work without any intension of rewards and Little Earth is about 360 degree panoramic of ruins and places to make it look like it is suspended in mid air.
 

 
Isshani and Gitanjali his two lovely daughters mean a world to him and considers his wife Priya his boss, who takes care of the numbers relating to PhotoMojo. At PhotoMojo they consider themselves as storytellers rather than photographers since they try to get to tell a story out of every photo, capturing and freezing the moment forever.
 

 
He had worked for 12 years in various companies, the last being Infosys working as a Senior Consultant for solution designing, taking care of re-engineering and supply chain part of it. While he was with Infosys he travelled extensively to US on work and was given a chance to relocate to US in 2009. He riskily made the choice to quit and gave himself one year to pursue his dreams. This was not so much of an overnight move. He had carefully planned and calculated to quit work to take up photography but had to speed up the process due to this offer from Infosys. There was no turning back after this. Infosys had also given him an open offer letter which he agrees was a cushioning, had he not succeeded in his venture.
 

 
In 2004 Mayur’s grandfather found a Yashica camera which he bought 25 years back when he had been to Germany and gave it to him, this is where it all started and stirred up dreams. His actual inspiration comes from a simple reason, when he looks at his family pictures he finds them incomplete – a void (like wish I had captured those moments with my late father ) and this he fills by photographing others ensuring those emotions are captured for them. He believes photographs are there to document history to remember the moment. He says a photographer should be selfless and not to go behind glory of it, that is when you freeze the best moments for it is selfless and glory will follow. He also goes on to say photography takes him to a state of  a Tapas  the ultimate redemption. He is also concentrating on cinematography now, a natural extension after photography.
 

 
The turning point for Mayur was when he started Bangalore Photography Club in 2004 with few friends, this gave him an opportunity to learn from others and take photography to a professional level. He says he genuinely learnt the basics and nuances of photography through this club. They also came up with a coffee table book called  a Bengaluru Mandi’s- the hidden hues of Bangalore Market  which was a collaborative effort of various members of the club documenting Bangalore markets for 1 ½ years. His photographs were displayed in a Frames of Minda’s in 2006-07 both organized by Bangalore Photography Club.
 

 
Mayur has only taken part in one competition till now! a  Digital Photograph of the year 2010’s UK, and won the landscape photography contest in the same. He has photographed more than 300 artists from Pt.Ravishankar to AR Rehaman in India, even covering International bands like Jetro Tull, Boney M, The Scorpions, Iron Maiden and more. Shooting live musicians in concert gives him a rush. He say’s Where there is music, there is raw energy. Working real time – in an air tight box a with no margin for error a with a split second to visualize, compose and capture the end frame a and if you miss that one moment a you’ve lost everything. I love the challenge’s. He cherishes even now, his first paid assignment to shoot Iron Maiden, getting a chance to watch, listen and photograph them from the press pit.
 

 
He uses only Nikon cameras and he has: Nikon D800, Nikon D600, Nikon 24-70 2.8, , Nikon 14-24 2.8, Nikon 80-200 2.8, Nikon 50mm, Nikon 85 1.4 and a Nikon 24 – 120 F4.
 

 
Mayur likes travelling and exploring a lot. He had been travelling to Cambodia every year for the last 4 years. He has also travelled to Leh, Bangkok, Spiti Valley, many south Indian temples and more. He is also planning to go to Myanmar this year. He travels to relish the culture and history of civilizations.

What is Canvas?
Canvas is an extremely heavy-duty plain-woven fabric used for making tents, Marquees, backpacks, and other items for which sturdiness is required. Artists also popularly use it as a painting or printing surface, typically stretched across a wooden frame. It is also used in such fashion objects as handbags, electronic device cases and shoes.  
 Origins of Canvas
 
The word canvas is derived from the 13th century Anglo-French (canevaz) and the French canevas. Both may be derivatives of the Vulgar Latin (cannapaceus) for “made of hemp,” originating from the Greek (κάνναβις)
                         

  
Early canvas was made of linen, a sturdy brownish fabric of considerable strength. Linen is particularly suitable for the use of oil paint. In the early 20th century, cotton canvas, often referred to as “cotton duck,” came into use. Linen is composed of higher quality material and remains popular with many professional artists, especially those who work with oil paint. Cotton duck, which stretches more fully and has an even, mechanical weave, offers a more economical alternative. The advent of acrylic paint has greatly increased the popularity and use of cotton duck canvas. Linen and cotton derive from two entirely different plants, the flax plant and the cotton plant.
                   
How Is Canvas Used
 
Canvas has become the most common support medium for oil painting, replacing wooden panels. One of the earliest surviving oils on canvas is a French Madonna with angels from around 1410 in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. However, panel painting remained more common until the 16th century in Italy and the 17th century in Northern Europe. Mantegna and Venetian artists were among those leading the change; Venetian sail canvas was readily available and regarded as the best quality.
                  
A canvas print is the result of an image printed onto canvas which is stretched, or gallery-wrapped, onto a frame and displayed. Canvas prints are often used in interior design, with stock images, or customized with personal photographs. Canvas prints are intended to reproduce the look of original oil or acrylic paintings on stretched canvas.

Canvas These Days!!!
Reproductions of original artwork have been printed on canvas for many decades using offset printing. Since the 1990s, canvas print has been associated with either dye sublimation or inkjet print processes (often referred to as epigraph or giclée respectively). The canvas print material is generally cotton often used for the reproduction of photographic images.
                        
Modern large format printers are capable of printing onto canvas rolls measuring 1.5 meters (49.5) or more. The Epson stylus Pro 9900 is capable of printing directly onto canvas. Printer such as this allow artists and photographers to print their works directly onto canvas media, with slow print speed settings available to ensure print quality is not diminished. Printed canvas for wall art is generally of a weight around 400 gsm and should be 100% pure white cotton for a more exact color representation. The life of the print is more than 50 plus years. The ink used in this printer is Ultra Chrome HDR inks and it reproduces wide gamut of colors.

Artist of the Week – Sabir Ahmed
Born in 1966 in the City of Gates; Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Sabir Ahmed grew up among the historical relics and monuments that the city prides on. While growing up, he took lots of interest to know the city and the great monuments intimately. Little did he know that his love for his city’s history and culture would make him a photographer famous for his black and white photography! Sabir did his primary & secondary education in Aurangabad and later finished his Production Engineering in the Jawaharlal Nehru Engineering College, also in Aurangabad. Sabir also completed an Executive Management Program from IIM, Bangalore.
 
 
As true as how the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, Sabir’s prime inspiration was his father, Late Saleem Ahmed who was himself an amateur photographer. He used to process and print his own photographs. One wouldn’t be wrong to say it is in his DNA to photograph! Sabir was also greatly influenced by his maternal uncle and his uncle’s friend. Although Sabir has not received formal training in photography, he mainly learnt thorough experience, or by reading photography magazines, books, journals and following work of masters.
 
 
His interest in landscapes, people and monuments is very evident in his photography. He mostly employs black and white to bring out a sense of nostalgia and bitter-sweet symphony in his subject. He treats his photographs as a part of him and develops them in his own darkroom using traditional methods. Sabir prefers to shoot film over digital photography. He is also experienced in working with large format glass negatives, scanning and archiving.
 
 
Sabir’s first camera was Canon EOS 500 an autofocus film camera which he bought in 1996. He currently has various formats in his collection of cameras  including Canon F-1, Hasselblad 500 C/M, a couple of rangefinders and a digital Canon EOS 5D. Sabir still has his dad’s old Yashica LM camera and sometimes photographs with it too.
 
 
In 2008, Sabir started a group called BangBW for photography enthusiasts in Bangalore for Black and White photography. The group, currently 260 members strong, meet during weekends for shoots in and around Bangalore. For more information, click here: Bang B W. Sabir is co-moderator for a Yahoo community called Bangalore Shutterbugs as well. He was also a part of a flickr group called Bangalore Weekend Shoots, now inactive, where photographers shoot different parts of Bangalore.
 
 
Sabir exhibited some of his photographs in a group exhibition called a Perspective’s in Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in 2005. He also showcased his photographs along with other members of BangBW on April 2014 in an event called a Light, Shadow and Life’s in Chitrakala Parishath. Apart from a few ongoing personal projects, his work has been regularly presented in various forums and published in a few international magazines. 
 
 
Sabir conducts black and white photography workshops where he imparts his knowledge to budding photographers. He also provides professional B&W processing & darkroom printing services.
 
 
Apart from photography, Sabir takes time out for reading, traveling and motorcycling. As a motorcycle enthusiast, Sabir owns a restored Yamaha RD-350. More importantly, enjoys spending time with his wife and two children at Cambridge layout in Ulsoor, Bangalore.
