Home / Blogs / Game Changers Interview with International Award-Winning Photographer – Anand Sharan

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a Professional Photographer and I have been a Photographer for about 25 years. But I started my career in Advertising and at the peak of my career I was the Director at a multinational advertising company, but I decided to quit. Because of the pull of Photography, the love of Photography was so much that I decided to quit. And take up Photography as a profession.

What inspired you to take up Photography as a profession?

One of the most influencing factors in my life was Late Mr. T. S. Satyan, world-famous Photographer and Photojournalist. And as a child, I have seen some of his pictures and the impact that it had on me, even till today, I will never forget his images. And, then we used to get a magazine called Life, big size magazine from America and the pictures there were awe-inspiring. This is one of the reasons, I took up Photography.

What were the challenges you faced?
When I joined the profession, because, you see, I quit at the peak of my career where I had all the facilities, perks that the corporate sector offers. Strangely, the reaction of most people when I quit a steady job was ‘Why take up Photography?’ Because even till today, we live in a status-conscious society where the perks working in corporate companies, being called a Director, matters a lot. So, the reactions were really strange, they said ‘Why Photography?’
Because mainly, the idea of Photography was somebody who shot pictures at a wedding & somehow scraped a living together. They never respected Photography, at least in my days as a profession. A very few people did and were able to accept it as an Art Form. The struggle has not changed and it still continues but I have overcome that because I enjoy my profession.

What area of Photography do you specialize in?

I think I like shooting people, culture and ancient monuments because they’re being destroyed at a very rapid pace. See what has happened to the Notre Dame Cathedral, see what happened to the Buddha in Afghanistan and even in India, there are such beautiful places, such beautiful monuments, Ancient Monuments which are not taken care of. And I’d like to shoot those monuments and document them and also the rich heritage of our country and people.

What makes a good picture?

What makes a good picture is a little difficult to define, I wish I had points 1, 2, 3, 4… you do this, and you will get a good picture. When you see a picture, it depends on how you react to it. For me, sometimes even out of focus pictures, slow Shutter Speed pictures, blurred pictures, I react to it. And it’s an emotion and if you see different styles of Photographers, Xavier Zimbardo on one side and Ansel Adams, the classical Photographer, on the other. There is an ocean of difference, it’s an art form. And I react, I don’t really depend on the rules or my conditioning of how or why I should like the photographs or why I don’t like it, I just react to it and when I react then I try to analyze what has really gone into this picture to make it so attractive. It not only touches my heart but visually it has an impact on me.

What differentiates a Professional from an amateur?

The difference, it’s a very thin line, these days, between Professional Photographers and Amateur Photographers. But, the people who make the grid, particularly as Professional Photographers and won International awards. They are, it’s a kind of an all-around education, not just the technical aspects of Photography, Music, the Books you’ve read, the people you know, people you have loved, everything goes into making a better picture.

Tell us about the awards and recognitions you’ve received.

Black and White Spider Awards is that it is very important to me because I love Black and White, I have a conventional lab, where I used to shoot and film and develop and make prints. So, this Black and White Spider Awards and International Award in Los Angeles. And, the first time I saw it on the net, some about 10 years back, I was really inspired by the award-winning photographs there and it was my dream to win at least a nomination. But I won now, about 6 nominations or 7 nominations right from 2014. I have been winning both Black and White Spider Award and International Color Awards. What is very important is Magnum recognized my work 2 years back.

You’ve received international recognition. Kindly share your experience.
The Saatchi Gallery of London, even till today, they have given me free space on their official website, where I can post my pictures. And also, sell my pictures and the best part of Saatchi is, they don’t charge a commission, it’s free for me. That encouraged me a lot when I started off. Even before that, I was invited by the Italian Government in Florence, there was an exhibition sponsored by UNESCO and the Italian Government. So, that was one of the earliest awards, many years back.

What inspired you to start a Photography Workshop?

I realized that there are a lot of people who want to learn Photography from a Professional Photographer but they didn’t have time to wait for a long term course, they had time just for weekends to become a serious hobbyist. And that’s how I started and the response has been very good. I have had many international award-winning photographers pass out of my workshop, the same kind of awards that I have got, they have won and I am very proud of that.

What can people expect at the workshop?

What I am offering is a two-day weekend workshop for serious hobbyists, 2 full days. Day 1, they have got the technical aspect covered, how shutter works, aperture works, how to take correctly exposed pictures, how your sensor works, colour temperature and so on. All the technical aspects as much as I can cover. And, on Day 2, is practicals. Practicals include on-location shoot where they learn how to handle the depth of field, and also different shutter speeds, understand metering and also shoot portraits both in-studio lights with studio setup, multi flashlight setup and also available light because most people when they go back they might not have flashlights. We also offer how-to shoot portraits in available light at home. And this broadly is the course structure of the two-day workshop.

What’s your advice to aspiring Photographers?

What they need to do is study great photographers and also films and also art books, paintings, classical painters, renaissance painters. If they study those books, large size books are available at reasonable prices and also on the net. Download these pictures and study them because understanding the interplay of light and shadows and so on, it is all there in the paintings, that history has offered us. So, I think you should study these pictures up before you start claiming yourself to be a Professional Photographer.

It is quite challenging.

All these days, especially in India, there were Photographers and there were printers. It’s presence is felt almost in all exhibitions here in Karnataka. Their “NEVER SAY NO” policy in sponsoring an event/exhibition, dedicated digital platform for buying and selling the photo arts are a real boon to Photography.

Its difficult to say about future plans. However, for me, it is about creating an image that people want to see over and over. WIDER ANGLES
Entrepreneur, Photojournalist & Writer

1. Would you tell us more about you and your interest in Photography?

The year 2009 dawned and it was a wrap. I packed up my flourishing IT career as a Technology consultant in a suitcase, locked it, never to open it again. Instead, I took over to a new suitcase and packed it with my camera gear, pens and words and the desire to explore the world (all this, after a Master’s degree in Engineering.) In other words, I chose to pursue my passion for Photography and Writing.

Today, I am an independent Photojournalist & a published Writer and run a firm, Wider Angles. I work for reputed magazines, Indian dailies, publishing houses, and portals. I have been teaching Photography and its’ various genres (from Basics to Post processing) since 2010 in Bangalore, as classroom workshops, experiential walks or experimental field trips. Also, I teach children of The International School of Bangalore(TISB), as a co-curricular skill.

I am very happy about the ‘Experience India!’ photography journeys that I started along with my photographer colleague, Rags K S, to parts of India. I/we lead these tours, where photographers join us to witness and frame ‘slices of India. Initiated in 2013, we have trips designed to nine Indian states, so far.

In addition, I undertake commercial photography projects. I work as a licensed artist with Getty Images, Shutterstock, and a few other stock agencies.

2. Can you please tell us about the types of Photography you indulge with?

I have dabbled with diverse genres of photography. I started with Street photography (as they say, ‘Life happens on the streets’) and moved on to dwell deeper into Architecture, Landscape, Portraits and Travel photography in totality. Wildlife and Astro Photography, have been my recent additions.

As you know, I undertake Commercial photography projects in Lifestyle and home décor, Urban Spaces, Products, Real Estate and Hotels, Corporate Interiors, food and commissioned travel…

3. What is the inspiration that keeps you going?

The constant changes happening around and the beauty of the world are inspiration enough to fuel my instincts as a Photographer. There is a childlike curiosity, each time I lay my hands on the camera. Through the lens, I seem to “see” an extra in the ordinary, making everything so extraordinary. To photograph the lives and stories of people and places is truly inspiring.

One of the projects I did for CRY (Childs Rights and You), involved finding out reasons on why underprivileged children do not go to school. It had me talking to parents, children, teacher of make-shift broken schools in several slums of Bangalore. Poverty was only one of the reasons; there are much more.  My body of images is helping CRY to build awareness across India – this is a truly inspiring and a satisfying experience.

In short, the photograph and the act of photography, the experience of seeing the world through a viewfinder, to see my byline in spaces and the high I get to see my students learn, succeed and smile; keep me going.

4. How do you feel when your work is exhibited and viewed by tons of people?

Happy! Like any Artist would feel.
To showcase images in an exhibition is to represent a part of yourself. So, when people watch and appreciate, it’s very gratifying.

5. Can you tell us something about Photography and its inception?

Most of us know the timeline of Photography – how daguerreotype got invented way back in 1839 and how photography became more prevalent with the colour photography being possible. The way it has evolved, from there on, is remarkable thus benefiting society. For example, the disruptive Drones have enabled in recording things that were impossible before. Be it conservation, farming, natural disasters or security, we are able to find solutions to major issues using these images. It’s definitely a revolution.

6. To you, what is Photography?

A Photograph is like a souvenir – a frame to cherish and recollect, even as Time has passed by. It’s the impression of a passing moment, an expression of a perception and reflection of how the photographer perceives it.

An interesting quote by Alfred Stieglitz, an American Photographer, “In photography, there is a reality so subtle that it becomes more real than reality”  – guess this is what I am after.  I photograph, to find the subtle realities that are hidden in the spaces and subjects around us. Each time seems like a new exploration and over the years, my camera has become my companion.

7. Please share us some of your achievements in Photography Profession?

Few achievements I am happy about include:

  • Received Acceptances for 12 images in three International Photography Salons
  • Won an ‘Award of Merit’ for the ‘Temples of Karnataka’ photo contest held by Karnataka Department of Tourism (DOT)
  • Featured under ‘Student Success story’ by the New York Institute of Photography (https://www.nyip.edu/photo-articles/student-success/hema-narayanan)
  • Recognised and invited by Youth Photography Society (YPS Bangalore), to address their audience and judge a DOT photo contest

A Galloping Start
Even as the hooves of the buffaloes gallop into the woods of the harsh terrain of Bhuj (Gujarat), the sun’s early rise lights up the scene. The light of the sunrise was the main element captured

8. Can you tell us something about your Photography community?

My photography community started with me being a member of the Bangalore Shutterbugs (BSB) group many years ago, with most of us have gone to the Bangalore school of photography, to learn the fundamentals. A great forum to learn and exchange.

Today, the network is slightly larger – am a member of the YPS Bangalore, and also network amidst different platforms (such as photographer groups, associates from Instagram, stock agencies, enthusiasts in the city and curators). I have my student photography community – an interesting mix.

9. Can you tell us about the general response you receive in exhibitions?

Quite good. Having worked on collaborative exhibitions mostly, I hope to put out more of my work for viewing, both as cyber-exhibitions and in galleries, going forward.

The Blue Ocean Strategy
The Blue Ocean Strategy

10. What do you think about the scope of Photography in the modern Digital world?

Endless! Whichever genre of photography one specializes in, there is a great need for professional photographers in the industry today – be it in the world of advertising agencies, media, print & film media, journalism, the fashion industry, content promoters or as an in-house photographer, in established firms. Infinite avenues in the glamour industry or event photography have cropped up, involving weddings, candid shots, family photography, children, pets, portfolio and much more. Many agencies need stunning images for their website, social media, and collaterals. The career scope is plenty and is monetarily well paying too, given that the photographer is well trained and skilled.

The digital world has opened up a plethora of tools, software’s and platforms, to learn, experiment and excel. Not to forget the mobile photography revolution. For ex: To build a website, was a huge task a decade ago. Today, a photographer’s website can be setup in a jiffy – over night.

11. How do you feel about your association with Honeycomb creative support?

Honeycomb has a dedicated team who strive to provide quality work for us, the photographers. They constantly are in varied platforms trying to promote photography in ways they can, for example: their rolling photography exhibitions. I have known Honeycomb from the time they began, going on to being their client for printing work to being a photographer exhibiting at their shows. I have thoroughly enjoyed my association with Honeycomb.

I even recollect, Sreekumar coming over to NGMA (National Gallery of Modern Arts) to hear me speak about transformation in the photography world – this shows how involved they are.

12. Can you share us your future plans and dreams?

Just like the adage, ‘Photography is the story I fail to put into words’, I find it hard to put my dreams into words. Nevertheless, working on projects of the quality and caliber that National Geographic engages in, is a goal. As for future plans, under Wider Angles, I plan to introduce at least one ‘Experience India’ photography journey in each state of our beautiful country.

Finally, I have a distant dream as well – to chase and frame the volcanoes and tornadoes!

Question 1): Would you tell us more about you and your interest in Photography?

After my Diploma in cinematography, I mostly involved myself with photography due to my childhood passion. Throughout my career spanning over 35 years, I’ve been a freelance professional mainly working with clients in the commercial and advertising sector. Most of my clients in the private sector have been top MNCs that you’ve come across on a daily basis. Government bodies too, like the BHEL, BEML, Indian Coffee Board, NALCO and many others have relied upon me for their imaging solutions.

On the other hand, my primary interests in the ‘art of photography’ have been primarily landscapes, pictorial and wildlife which I’ve mainly specialized in. I like to travel a lot since my profession demands it. Hence, I’ve now also begun covering travel and people etc.

Question 2): Can you please tell us about the types of Photography you indulge with?

As I said, I’m primarily a commercial and advertising photographer. It includes an assorted set of services like celebrations, candids, consumables(food), hospitality and interiors, large scale and commercial spaces, product shoots, special assignments, and weddings. But I do frequently move out of the city in search of wildlife and landscapes. If you don’t find me in Bengaluru, I’ll be either camping in the Himalayas or searching for wildlife in some national parks in the Northern part of the county.

Question 3): What is the inspiration that keeps you going?

The art of photography, to do something creative, and by looking at others images, which prompts me to make me to try something new. Everyday I get inspired.

Question 4): How do you feel when your work is exhibited and viewed by tons of people?

Well, it’s a celebration of my works, which is appreciated by tons of artists and well wishers. it is their encouragement, which keeps me going. I honor their criticism as well as their appreciation. it gives me more energy and feel enlighted , when they use all adjectives.

Question 5): Can you tell us something about Photography and its inception?

Well, it is an International language, which has no boundaries, understood by all. It is an art form, which gives satisfaction to millions, irrespective of their cast and work they do. It is totally a stress buster to those who are workaholics. in fact, we wait for some reasons to pick our camera and go out into nature.

Question 6): To you, what is Photography?

It is a passion, a religion, a dream, and it is my life. Photography isn’t just about clicking pictures or winning awards. It is a continuous learning process that can throw open various ideas from just a single book in a store. It’s about enjoying the thought process that goes into making a ‘great picture’.

Question 7): Please share us some of your achievements in Photography Profession?

I’ve been honored by some of the world’s best photo organizations in this world.

2001

I was awarded the ‘Lalitha Kala Academy award’ for photography alongside recognizing me as a ‘State Artist’.

I’ve also won the Lalitha Kala Academy Award in the state of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.
Apart from these, there are about countless medals, and certificates from various international salons worldwide.

Honeycomb is a very creative digital media firm than any others I’ve come across so far. The way they approach anything related to print media always amazes me. Due to my pleasing experience with them, I’ve recommended a dozen people to have their print and digital media requirements covered by Honeycomb and their response has always been highly positive.
